Very good essay, thank you. A lot of very broad strokes and I see many, many exceptions to your generalizations, but that doesn’t detract from the main premise. A little surprising it is written from someone who, I believe, considers himself far left. If you told me J D Vance wrote it I would believe you. The Democratic Party would do well to have a talk with you.
the democratic party should could benefit from a talk with me, if the leadership were at all interested in winning, but they'd rather promote the republicans by being servants of the billionaires, too! definitely lots of exceptions to my broad strokes, and i hope that's evident to people, even when i don't spell them all out. lots of different people in every quintile!
many of these people "selling out to billionaires" have sold out for as little as $80,000
80k would change my wife and I's lives forever, but it wouldn't be anywhere close to enough to compromise my lifelong values. 80k gets you about four or five used cars, or one tiny piece of land in dire need of renovation
Good points David, especially regarding class and how we experience life.
Interesting, for sure, seeing the working class and youth (the majority of young men for example) in North America support conservative parties and government cutbacks. Meanwhile, the property class support the center left parties. Complete reversal of the 20th century and what I experienced when younger. My grandparents all voted conservative.
