To David,

I am so saddened to hear about Joan. I earned about her death just now when I did a search for her on Facebook and this posting showed up. She and I were close friends in Ithaca, N.Y., where we went to Cornell and later worked in Ithaca. She was indeed highly intelligent, well read and had a great sense of humor. "Wonderful and brilliant" describes her well.

The photo of Joan that is included here shows her much as I remember her.

She exhibited a flair for planning adventurous trips. Once, on the spur of the moment, she arranged a trip in which we escaped the brutal upstate New York winter weather and flew to Florida and Key West. She gave me a tile that still hangs in my kitchen, showing a stove, a big window with palm trees outside and the caption, "Dreams off the back burner." That sums up how she approached her life.

We grew apart when I moved to California, and I last saw her during a Boston trip 25 years ago. But it's no surprise to read that she was active in the anti-war movement, and she always exhibited a passion for music.

David, thank you for this beautifully written tribute to a remarkable woman. I'll pass the word to my friends who knew her.

Sincerely,

Deborah
