Thanks for this. I have long agitated for getting the true story of Japanese surrender out there, and how the nukes were unnecessary, but not til now have I seen how important it is to debunk that myth because of how it could affect contemporary decision making.

Sometimes what I worry about most is that today's rulers often seem to actually believe the myths that many of their forebears knew were propaganda intended only for mass consumption.

Yes it does seem like that's happening more and it certainly is worrisome!! Are today's rulers less intelligent? Or has the propaganda just gotten more sophisticated and effective, fooling more of them?

The propaganda has certainly gotten more personalized, in many ways more sophisticated, tho in other ways less so, seems to me. I think today's rulers are definitely less intelligent, in the US, anyway -- because of the increased levels of corruption compared to decades ago, the scum more easily rises to the top.
