Another great piece! My kid is now doing church gigs, has just started a music studio business teaching voice and piano, and has his own band. Not exactly following in our footsteps, but he got a great music education from listening to classical music with video games, taking piano lessons and performing in school (in one play with his old man as music director!) when he was young, and getting to learn and do jazz first in high school locally and then at Interlochen Arts Acadamy high school, where he took music composition as his concentration, and then at Middlebury College, where he studied mostly voice but did lots of keyboard work, all as an aside to his major — environmental studies (his dad’s profession for quite a while). I agree it’s a shame that our mainstream public education system doesn’t stress the arts. I work in the schools and see some amazing talent there. They get some learning in the arts, but it’s not considered core subjects. I encourage all parents to lobby for more public spending on arts education, and to continue to give their kids every opportunity to express themselves both in school and in the community.

David, you said something very true and important.

My family was very musical. My parents met at choir and went to choir (in addition to church choir) every week for decades. When they considered whether I should look at a music career, they decided it was not a workable plan. For all the reasons you just said.
