Good observations, David. In the '60's and '70's the Civil Rights and Anti-war organizations communicated and got people out to marches and rallies by holding poster parties and meetings at their headquarters, usually some rented commercial space in the working class part of town, followed by social events like a dance or pub night. That brought people together to discuss local and world events while making posters for the next march or picket line protest. It all resulted in a positive feeling of solidarity that, as you say, is lacking today. The use of cell phones and social media on them tends to atomize people even when they are together as they stare at their phones instead of talking to each other. But email is a great organizing tool and without it I wouldn't be aware of much of what is going on locally or internationally. It enables writers like you to reach a worldwide audience, so technology is a two edged sword.
